Anganwadis call off agitation

GUWAHATI, May 8: Following an assurance from the State Directorate of Social Welfare on their demands, the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers’ Association (AWHA) called off their agitation from tomorrow.

Earlier in the day today the Anganwadis demonstrated for the seventh day at Dighalipukhuripar in the city in support of their demands for additiol remuneration of Rs 5,000 for anganwadi workers and Rs 3,500 for anganwadi helpers, one-time ex-gratia for them at the time of retirement at the rate of Rs 2 lakh for workers and Rs 50,000 for helpers, provision of ESI for both workers and helpers, conversion of the mini anganwadi centres into full-fledged ones, promotion of anganwadi helpers in the vacant posts, scientific construction of anganwadi houses, reconstruction of the broken anganwadi houses, making potable water and kitchen available in anganwadi centres, supply of playing kits at anganwadi centres and making all such facilities available in the BTAD area as well. The agitation had begun on May 2, 2017. During the agitation today the security personnel had to use water cannons to disperse the agitating employees.

Following the assurance, the anganwadi centres will remain open from May 11 even as they would continue their non-cooperation.
