GUWAHATI, April 30: The central office of the Assam Press Correspondents’ Union (APCU) was formally opened by senior jourlist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan at Champak gar in the Bhetapara area in the city on its 23rd foundation day today.

The office was doted by Akon Saikia of Biswath Chariliali in the me of his parents – Late Putu Saikia and Late Boruni Saikia. The function also saw the conferment of the Hritamala Dutta All Assam Women Jourlist Award to Anuradha Sarma Pujari at a function with APCU president Manoj Singh in the chair. The award, instituted by the APCU under the aegis of its Charaideo District Committee, was given away by Bhuyan.

In his speech, Bhuyan said: “The jourlists will have to take their movement further. I laud Akon Saikia for doting the office.”

Receiving the award, Sarma Pujari said: “News may be sensatiol, but should always be based on facts. No news should be made sensatiol only with words but without important information. There has been a fall in the principle of a section of jourlists. Gender bias has no place in jourlism. Not giving the responsibility of page 1 in newspapers to women jourlists isn’t just. This is because female jourlists too work as hard as their male counterparts.”

APCU adviser Shoubhit Kumar Chetry, Guwahati Press Club general secretary va Thakuria, Dispur Press Club general secretary Kunja Mohan Ray, senior jourlist Amal Gupta, Dispur Hospital PRO Ujjal Saikia, Akon Saikia’s family members and others were present at the function where a Hepatitis-B vaccition drive was also conducted.
