GUWAHATI, June 19: “Are the ministers of Assam above the law? If a minister can be arrested by Delhi Police for producing a fake certificate, how come an Assam minister producing a fake certificate be immune to the law?” Asks RTI activist Dulal Bora.

“Through RTI applications I’ve obtained the educatiol documents of former State Social Welfare Minister and Dispur MLA Akon Bora. For the past four years I’ve been vocal demanding his arrest. I’ve filed a case against him for producing fake education certificates. However, the Assam Police don't dare to arrest him. They should take a cue from Delhi Police on proper policing. Nobody should be above the  law as is the case in Assam,” Bora said.

The RTI activist further said: “According to records I’ve obtained through RTI applications, there are as many as 321 cases pending against Assam ministers and MPs, MLAs and former MLAs . This figure may leave the police in other States simply dumbfounded. In a State where ministers and MPs can bend the law so as to evade arrests, the corrupt bureaucrats can get the escape routes at ease as they, in most of the cases, do things with ulterior motive at the diktat of the former.”

The RTI activist appealed to the Chief Minister, the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Home Commissioner to speed up the cases registered against ministers and MPs.
