Assam Bandh against scrapping of district

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Oct 13: The East Kamrup NSUI Co-Ordition Committee has called a 12-hour East Kamrup bandh on Friday in protest against withdrawal of East Kamrup’s district status

Several organisations, including the All Bodo Students’ Union, Karbi Jatiya Parishad, AATSA, Youth Congress, Mahila Congress have extended support to the bandh following the withdrawal of East Kamrup’s district status, a long-standing demand of the people of Dimoria and Chandrapur.

The earlier Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government created the district through a notification on February 27.

Earlier, Assam transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary had said the cabinet decided to scrap the two districts as the move was found unviable and the previous government had created them without creating the posts of deputy commissioners and superintendents of police.

The cabinet, however, approved of the creation of three subdivisions - Chaygaon in South Kamrup and Chandrapur and Sopur in East Kamrup - in place of the two districts, the minister had said.

East Kamrup district, carved out of Kamrup (metro) district with portions of Dispur and Jagiroad Assembly constituencies, was calm. The district was created for administrative convenience.
