BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Nov 12:  Importance of rulers like Chaolung  Siukapha is badly felt in Assam at a time when people in the State are divided on ethnicity, most of the speakers said at the Siukapha Day function held centrally in Guwahati on Saturday.
The Ahom Kingdom ruled Assam for long 600 years with love and fellow feeling amongst all the communities. Along with other places of the state, the Siukapha Divas was celebrated at Sukapha Bhawan at Jayagar in the city. Art competitions and extempore speech competitions, among others, were some of the programmes held on the occasion. The role of Chaolung Siukapha in building the Assamese community was discussed elaborately by certain invited guests.
Prof of History at Gauhati University Rajib Handique said, “The situation of present day Assam is like the pre-Siukapha period when all the communities were left scattered and divided across the state. After that in 1228 AD Siukapha came to Assam and he brought together all the small communities of Assam. Chieftains of all the small communities surrendered before the efficient leadership of Emperor Chaolung Siukapha.” Speakers Govinda Prasad, Rajib Paniphukan and Jugen Phukan also participated in the discussion.
