GUWAHATI, January 4: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) president Akhil Gogoi today alleged that the top–rung of the Assam Police had links with NDFB(S) chief Songbijit.

The farmers’ leader said this in the backdrop of IGP (law and order) SN Singh’s statement that the December 23 massacre in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts had been carried out at the diktat of the outfit’s ‘commander’ Bidai without any consent from Songbijit. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was quipped to contest the IGP’s statement and said that without Songbijit’s knowledge such a mayhem was simply not possible.

Talking to newsmen in the city today, Akhil Gogoi said: “The IGP’s statement laid bare the fact that the top–rung of the state police force has links with Songbijit who, in the recent past, had been on record saying that his outfit would do something that would land the Tarun Gogoi government in troubled waters. And the outfit translated that utterance into action after a few days. In such a situation, how come the IGP give such a clean chit to the NDFB(S) chief? Isn’t he trying to protect Songbijit?”

Akhil Gogoi further said: “SN Singh is on record creating such problems wherever he had been posted. When he had been City SP, the October 30, 2008 serial blasts had rocked the city. During that tenure, there had been the allegation of payment of Rs 5 crore to the ULFA. When he was the IGP in the BTAD, there had been commul clashes between the Bodos and minority people, leading to the killing of 50 minority people in the BTAD. It was during his tenure as the IGP (law and order in the state) 40 people were killed in the Rabha–Hasong Autonomous Council area.”

Akhil Gogoi asked the Chief Minister to ascertain where DGP Khagen Sarma had been on the day of the massacre by the NDFB(S). “Wasn’t he present at the mahurat of a Hindi film in Mumbai on that day?” the farmers’ leader said, and added: “The Chief Minister should also ascertain as to how many days the DGP comes to office in a week.”
