Assam surpasses tiol sanitation average

GUWAHATI, Feb 8: Assam has surpassed the tiol average in the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), one of the priority flagship programmes of the Centre. Against the tiol coverage of 60.24 per cent, Assam has achieved 65.21 per cent as on February 7, 2017.

For fiscal 2016-17 the target was to provide sanitation facility to 8.5 lakh families by way of toilets and 6.21 lakh of toilets (as on 7 February 2017) have already been constructed. And the department is putting in every effort to achieve all the targets set for this year and improve the sanitation scerio in the state.

State PHE Minister Rihon Daimary said: “The Department is collaborating with Dibrugarh University for harnessing youth power to develop Open Defecation Free (QDF) Assam. Dibrugarh University covers 175 colleges, spreading across seven districts of the State –Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Golaghat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji. The formation of the College Health & Sanitation Club (CHSC) as Team Swachh Bharat is one of the notable achievements under this initiative where student volunteers are working towards generating awareness on WASH among the community and contributing towards building ODF villages. Similarly, recently collaboration with Gauhati University has been initiated. To promote cleanliness, the government has instituted the Cleanest Village Award, and cleanest village in every district was identified through a rigorous exercise; and evaluated by a third party, Omeo Kumar Das Institute for Social Change and Development, for objectivity. The cleanest village identified in each district was awarded Rs. 1 lakh and the cleanest village in Assam (Rangchapara in Goalpara) will be awarded Rs. 5 lakh under SBM (G).”
