ATASU ultimatum to government

GUWAHATI, March 18: The All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) has issued an ultimatum to Dispur and New Delhi on their demand for ST status to the Tai Ahoms. Talking to newsmen in Guwahati today, ATASU president Litul Burhagohain said: “If the ST status is not ensured for the Tai Ahoms well ahead of the Assembly elections in he state in 2016, the ATASU will campaign against the Congress and the BJP, including taking out indefinite torchlight processions against the two tiol parties.”

Burhagohain further said: “Till then, in order to put pressure on the government we will stage tiol highway blockade on March 25 and rail roko on March  30. We will also stage dhar in New Delhi during the summer session of Parliament.”

Burhagohain criticized the Gogoi Government for not allocating any funds for the preservation of the heritage of the Ahoms and the Tai Ahom Development Council. The students’ body will stage dhar at Dispur Last Gate on March 24 in protest against the negligence by the government.
