AXX to hold centery sans Rajbongshi

GUWAHATI, Dec 14: All’s not well in the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) in the run-up to its centery celebrations slated from December 26-27, 2016. The premier literary body in the State is in troubled waters yet again, this time around on the vexed issue of extension of the two-year term of the executive committee of the Xabha to a three-year one recently, apparently on the pretext of holding its centery celebrations. The current logjam has prompted AXX president Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bora to call an emergent meeting of former AXX presidents on December 20 so as to guide the Xabha.

However, the logjam took a new twist with the iuguration committee of AXX centery celebrations and various organizations of Sivasagar took a decision in unison not to allow AXX secretary general Paramanda Rajbongshi to enter Jerenga Pathar where the AXX is going to kick-start its centery celebrations. Sivasagar is the place where the AXX had its first session in 1917 with Padmath Gohain Baruah as its president.

Since the extension of the term of the AXX executive committee by a year has no constitutiol sanction, 22 noted persolities, including four former AXX presidents, noted writers, jourlists and educationists circulated an open appeal for the formation of the new central executive committee of the AXX as usual, on December 11. The concern over extension of the term of the AXX executive committee is glaring in the appeal that also questioned the continuation of the present AXX secretary general, albeit without ming him. The 22 persolities demand that the new body of the AXX should be made immediately, and if the need arises, the centery celebrations of the Xabha should be deferred by a year.

This open appeal prompted the AXX to call an emergent steering committee meeting on December 12 when the allegations leveled by the 22 noted persolities were rejected outright. AXX secretary general Paramanda Rajbongshi even went to the extent of telling the media that the 22 persolities had hatched a conspiracy against the AXX. He said that it had been a design in the past five years. “As and when the AXX starts its session, a section of intellectuals and former AXX presidents start an unreasoble debate. This time also, they’ve hatched a conspiracy against the AXX when it is going to celebrate its centery celebrations,” Rajbonsghi said on December 12, after the meeting.

The statement from Rajbongshi has stirred up the hornets’ nest in the State. Two former AXX presidents – Dr. Lakshmindan Bora and Dr. gen Saikia and two other noted writers – Ranjit Kumar Debogoswami and Dr. Rajen Saikia – quit the AXX on December 13. All the four were advisers to the History Committee of the AXX. Talking to the media, they said that they had been entrusted with the important responsibility of the history section of the AXX. The AXX, they said, resorted to violate its constitution by extending its term by a year. They also questioned: “Who’re conspirators – Paramada Rajbongshi or we? How come Rajbongshi clings to power in the AXX for eight years at a stretch? His sticking to power in the AXX is simply strange.”
