Morigaon district administration to evict settlers from Hatimuria and Hiloikhunda from today: MLA

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, August 16: Reacting sharply to the recent incident of some religious minority settlers reportedly bashing up the indigenous people to two villages near Mayong, the BJP Assam Pradesh today said in no uncertain terms that such attacks on the indigenous people by settlers would not be tolerated.

According to reports, some eight years back as many as eight families came to Hatimuria near Mayang in Morigaon district from Gasbari near Mangaldai. Since the eight families claimed themselves to be erosion-affected, the soft-hearted villagers of Hatimuria allowed them to settle temporarily in their village under the condition that they would have to move away as soon as the government made land available for their settlement. During the eight years when the simpleton Hatimuria villagers were lulling themselves into a false sense of security on the ground of being local, the settlers were slowly but certainly outnumbering them – with the number of settlers’ families increasing manifold. The local people of Hatimuria and Hiloikhunda awoke only on August 14, 2016 when they were reportedly bashed up by the settlers. A clash between the local residents of the two villages and the settlers took place, and the locals were at the receiving end. Being outnumbered and overpowered, the local villagers had no way out but to stage a protest in front of Mayong police station against the slack response from the police to the incident.

In a statement issued to the press today, BJP Assam Pradesh in-charge president Santanu Bharali said: “The encroachers have to be evicted from Hatimuria village. If any of them is found to have settled at the village illegally, they should be tackled in accordance with the law. Such attack on indigenous people by settlers won’t be tolerated.”

Meanwhile, Jagiroad MLA Pijush Hazarika said: “The land where the settlers are staying has to be made encroachment free. From tomorrow the Morigaon district administration will take necessary action.”

Meanwhile, the local people alleged that some of the settlers are people of suspected tiolities.
