Be innovative, Sonowal tells GMC on revenue generation

GUWAHATI, Dec 20: Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal has laid stress on revenue generation and directed a delegation of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to adopt innovative measures for it.

Discussing various issues of the Corporation at a meeting held today at Brahmaputra State Guest House, the Chief Minister asked the delegation led by GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania to carry out a survey of the city to identify potential areas and to utilize it for increasing the revenue collection.

“The additiol revenue to be generated from these potential areas should be used for improving civic facilities, beautification of the city and to increase citizens’ convenience. However, the proposed means of revenue collection should not negatively impact the city dwellers,” cautioned Sonowal.

Stating that tax-payers support is crucial for effecting newer changes, the Chief Minister advised the delegation to conduct citizens’ meet to apprise them whenever any such potential revenue generating areas are identified. Sonowal also advised the GMC members to regularly inform the citizens about the bottlenecks faced by them while implementing the development activities as well as to draw their attention into all positive interventions. Sonowal also guided them for integrating the service delivery mechanism of GMC and create single-window operation system, wherever possible.

“Being the apex civic body, GMC should have an imposing building with all modern amenities to create a better working environment as well as setting an impression about the standard of the city in the minds of the tax-payers and the visitors,” said Sonowal.

Underlining the need for a visible structure for the city, Sonowal further advised to construct a new state-of-the-art building for the GMC and advocated for renovating market places, construction of multi-storey parking facility and welcome gates at all the entry points of the city.

In order to improve coordition amongst all wings of the GMC, Sonowal asked the Mayor to conduct meetings with all officials concerned in every 15 days to identify contentious issues. In such meetings, the branch officers will table the progress of various activities undertaken by them. Sonowal also informed the delegation that soon a meeting between the GMC and all stakeholders of the State Government will be held under his chairmanship to settle all alarming issues of municipal administration.

Sonowal also spoke on his vision about Guwahati as a city with all modern amenities and planned construction and shared with them the proposed State capital region concept. The proposed concept will increase the radius of the city encompassing several sub-urban areas and will open new vistas for a life with better facilities for the city dwellers.
