Beautification drive in city!

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 17: The onus of decking up Guwahati lies with everybody living in the city. This is what the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has all along been trying to get across. The GMDA is on a beautification overdrive yet again – covering a number of areas in the city this time around. GMDA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. M Angamuthu has said that a number of beautification schemes have been taken up in Guwahati, covering a number of roads.
Talking to this reporter, Angamuthu said: “We’ve taken up a number of beautification schemes in the city – one spanning from Bhangagarh Flyover-Sarba Shiksha Abhiyan office at Kahilipara via the Medical College Road, Zoo Tiniali-rengi, Six Mile-Kalakshetra and from Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) office at Khapara-Joyagar. We may take up the beautification of Judges’ Field, Soram Playground and Gandhi Mandap in the city.”
Talking to this reporter, a source in the GMDA said: “Changes in the look of Guwahati are quite visible now. Guwahatians may not fail to notice the new sets of streetlights in the city that looks brighter than ever before. The artificial peacock adding to the look of the city at Dispur Last Gate shouldn’t escape the notice of the people of the locality. Flower plants have been planted in various roadsides in the city. However, beautification of Guwahati can never be a one-way traffic. Those at the helm of affairs and the public should do their duty to deck up the city. Sometimes, miscreants try to damage beautification works. Some may even take decorative objects from city roads away. It is the duty of every citizen with civic sense to inform us or the police for such acts that are in no way going to help the city and its denizens.”
Such a beautification drive was taken up in the city recently in the run-up to Advantage Assam. One of the questions that struck everybody’s mind in the city at that time was: why is such beautification overdrive in the city only when there is some big event? The latest beautification drive in the city, if taken up with the right earnestness, can answer a number of unswered questions on beautification of Guwahati. Will Angamuthu rise to his full height?
