By our Staff Reporter

Guwahati, February 25: “A new political party is going to be floated with the help of the Ahom Royal Society (ARS) and the Ahom Royal Youth Federation (ARYF) for the development of the indigenous people of Assam and to make the state stronger by translating the dream of unity among all the indigenous people into a reality. The fil decision in this regard would be taken in the next round-table conference slated to be held at Jorhat. The decision would be taken after discussing the matter with various tribal societies of the state and scholars,” said the Assam Khilangia Gamancha (AKG) at a press meet at Guwahati Press Club today.

The representatives of the AKG said: “We want mass awareness in Assam so that the state gets a special status that is a must for proper development of the indigenous tribes living here. We have to fight to get 30 per cent royalty for the resources of the state like petroleum, coal and gas. The indigenous people of the state need a special safeguard by bringing amendment to the existing land laws so as to stop buying or transferring of land to anyone who is not an indigenous of the state. We also want our six tribes – Moran, Mottuk, Koch Rajbongshi, Chutia, Tai Ahom and Tea Tribe –  get ST status.”
