BJP and allies to go it alone in rural body polls

GUWAHATI, Aug 29: Both BJP and its two allies—AGP and BPF— in the Sarbanda Sonowal-led government will go it alone in the upcoming panchayat polls in State.  

The panchayat poll is likely to be held early next year.

BJP had formed a coalition government in the state with AGP and BPF after sweeping the assembly election.

Party sources said that the workers of both the parties are in favour of fighting the upcoming rural body polls alone.

According to sources, the leadership of both parties also thinking in the same line.

State BJP president Ranjit Kr Dass earlier had said that the executive meeting of the party has decided that BJP will fight the panchayat polls alone.

AGP president Atul Bora as well hinted that the party wanted to go solo in the panchayat polls.

On the other hand, BPF has also decided to field candidates outside BTAD in the panchayat polls. Panchayat elections are not held in BTAD.

Sources, however, said that the three parties is likely to fight the Lok Sabha polls in 2019 together.

“The decision to go it alone in the panchayat elelctions, will not have any impact on the party’s alliances with the AGP and the BPF in the state government. The alliance will continue,” said a source.
