GUWAHATI, Nov 25: The BJP Assam Pradesh has hailed Dispur’s eviction drive to make government land free from encroachment. The AIUDF has, on the other hand, opposed it. In a statement issued to the press on Saturday, State BJP spokesperson Muminul Aowal said: “The tough stance taken by Dispur in eviction of encroachers from government land in Darrang district has been welcomed by all. The statement made by Darrang Deputy Commissioner that 3,500 bighas government land has been encroached upon at Fuhuratuli Chapori and Gandia Bazar in Sipajhar speaks volumes of the ground reality there. Dispur should take a tough stand against all encroachers of government land in accordance with the Assam Land Act. We appeal to the government to provide land to landless in the State. Former MLA Joith Sarma did settle 199 families in that area. Thereafter, around 5,000 families encroached upon 75,000 bighas of land in that area. Such encroachment of land with political patroge can never be accepted.” Meanwhile, condemning the eviction drive at Sipajhar in Darrang district, the AIUDF has moved the Union Home Ministry (MHA) with a memorandum. They demanded compensation and rehabilitation of the 40 families evicted from the area.
