BJP hits back at Congress

Crime against women

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, June 8: Hitting back at Congress, the woman wing of the State BJP on Thursday said that the allegations brought out by Assam PCC general secretary Bobbeeta Sharma are totally baseless.

Assam PCC general secretary Sharma on Tuesday had alleged that crime against women in Assam was rising day by day and the state was becoming unsafe for women.

Reacting to the allegations, BJP Mahila Morcha state president Bijuli Kalita in a statement said that the figures presented by Sarma on crime against women in the State are misleading.

“The Congress, when it was in power, itself issued statement in the Assembly that highest number of cases of crime against women took place between 2001 and 2015,” Kalita said in the statement.

According to then Congress minister Rakibul Hussain during the period from 2001 to 2015, a total of 21,556 cases of rape and 91,419 cases harassment took place, she said.

Kalita said that as per police record, as many as 15,206 cases of rape are being registered at different police stations of the State till August, 2014.

“So records say the crimes that took place against women during the Congress rule was several times more compared to the present BJP government,” she claimed.

Giving a comparative alysis of the crimes that took place against women during the Congress rule as opposed to the present BJP government, Congress MLA ndita Das had said, “In 2015, during the Congress reign, 11,680 cases of atrocities against women were registered. In 2016, after coming of the BJP to power the number of cases against women increased to 16,194 and till April this year the atrocities against women was 4,763. It is very alarming.”
