GUWAHATI, February 12: State BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharya thanked the people of Assam for voting in favour of the party in the civic elections, the counting for which was held on Thursday.  The BJP performed much better than the ruling Congress and the AGP in this year’s civic elections, Bhattacharya said.  Altogether 2,901 candidates were in fray for the municipal board and town committee elections. There are a total of 746 wards in 32 municipal boards and 42 town committees in the State.  The number of voters was 14,84,496, which has gone up by 12 per cent, as compared to the civic polls held in 2009.
