BSNL sets Digital India target for Assam GPs

GUWAHATI, Jan 9: BSNL will connect 1,518 gram panchyats with optical fibre cables within this year under Digital India program.

Participating in an AIR News talk show in Guwahati on Sunday moderated by Mas Pratim Sarma, Chief General Mager of BSNL Assam Circle M K Seth said that 5200 kilometres optical fibres will be laid this year. Seth said that Kshetri Gaon Panchayat is all set to be probably the first digital gaon panchayat of the country. Seth said stress has been given to provide better and affordable connection at rural areas.

He said that BSNL will provide 3,000 hotspots at important places. He said that BSNL has taken step for automatic hook up point through wireless network. High speed network will be installed in Guwahati by March this year.

According to Seth, with SBI, BSNL will soon start e-wallet MOBICASH following demonetization.

Participating in the program, Joint Secretary of Assam IT Department Fakar uddin Ahmed said that target has been set to make 1 lakh people digitally literate by March this year. He said 65,000 people have already been trained in this direction. According to him, target is to make digitally literate 25 lakh people by 2022 for which Assam government has taken a holistic approach.

Ahmed said that the Assam government has set the target to provide TV, Net and telephone connections through a single connection. He said that this will be started at Kshetri and project has been prepared to cover Kamrup Metro and Kamrup district next at Rs 97 crore.
