GUWAHATI, Nov 7: Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakraborty iugurated a silk worm rearing facility, a model laboratory centre for rearing muga silk worm indoor at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (IASST) in the city today.

In her speech, the MP said: "IASST has taken a good initiative in increasing the production of Muga silk, which is rare now. The model centre will help other people of the state to rear silk in their houses, instead of going outdoor. I will be happy to involve myself in the development of this unique project of IASST. The Eco Park of the IASST is also a noble step, which will provide the balance of eco-system in the city."

IASST director NC Talukdar said: "The model laboratory of rearing silk worm indoor will give a new idea to the general people who rear silk worm indoor. Generally, the silk worm reared outdoor can give best production only in October month, and can be used for commercial usage due to change of weather attack of other insects. However, rearing silk worm indoor will give them same environment and temperature the whole year which will help them produce same amount of silk in every season and help the people grow their business. The project iugurated today will start working full-fledged from next month. We have also submitted a memorandum to MP Chakraborty to allot us around 20 bighas more land to extend our Eco Park and the project of silk worm. At present we have 60 bigha land in our institute, which is not sufficient for us."
