City danseuse enthralls Dhaka audience

GUWAHATI, Feb 5: Smita Lahkar (Jhumur), a noted Bharatatyam dancer of Guwahati city, enthralled the audience in an intertiol cultural extravaganza at Dhaka.

Smita was part of the Indian delegation to the recently held Bangladesh-Tripura Sankskritik Utsav 2017 (Bangladesh-Tripura Cultural Festival 2017) held in Dhaka from January 19 t0 21.

The festival, which was held at Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka, was organised by Bangaladesh-Tripura Sanskritik Utsav Committee in association with Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangladesh and Bangladesh Shilpakala Akademy.

Jhumur performed two dance items at the festival – one solo and one group. Her solo performance on January 19 started with Shiva Stotra. It was followed by Sloakam, an excerpt from Soundarya Lahari. The much-applauded dance performance depicted all the eight Rasas discussed in Bharata Muni’s tya Shastra. This dance recital was choreographed by Abhiy Queen Padma Bhushan Kalanidhi rayan.

January 21, Jhumur was part of the group item Tridhara, choreographed by Chinmay Das. The performance, comprising seven dancers, was on World Peace.

Among the dignitaries, who watched the programmes and applauded the performances, include Subar Kazi, the grandson of the great Kazi zrul Islam. Also, the High Commissioner of India in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla highly appreciated the recitals.

Born and brought up in Guwahati, Jhumur is the only daughter renowned theatre persolity, filmmaker and educationist Dr Sitath Lahkar and retired employee of United Bank of India, mita Lahkar.
