City Gorkha body condemns police firing in Darjeeling

GUWAHATI, June 21: Akhil Assam Gorkha Sammelan took out a candlelight procession from Nepali Mandir premises of Paltan Bazar in the city to pay tribute to the martyrs of Gorkhaland turmoil erupted out of imposition Bengali as a compulsory subject in the schools of Darjeeling hills on June 20, 2017.
About 100 members of the organization took part in the procession, including large number of women. Due to sheer negligence and arrogance of West Bengal administrative machineries towards the sentiments of hill people, the peaceful agitation turned into a battle field, leading to loss of three lives, said leaders of the Akhil Assam Gorkha Sammelan. The Sammelan condemned the police firing, besides condemning the forcible imposition of the Bengali language on Gorkhas. 
The procession in the city was led by the working president of the Sammelan, Uday Chetri  and others.
