City Police acts fast, rescues hostage and arrests nine

GUWAHATI, April 28: As many as nine people, including two women, have been arrested since last night in connection with the abduction of Ashraf Khan, a businessman, from Sijubari in Guwahati on April 21. The police rescued Khan from a house inside a pine apple orchard at Nongpoh in Meghalaya.

According to police sources, on April 24 the abductors demanded a ransom amount of Rs 5 crore for the safe release of Khan. Till yesterday, the abductors were ready to release the hostage at Rs 1.5 crore.    

Acting on the case filed by the family members of Khan, the police arrested Majamil Haque and Kamarul Hussain from garbera yesterday. Another team of police rescued Khan from a house inside a pine apple orchard at Nongpoh. Two persons – Md Ali Jinh and Kalam Ali – were arrested from the house. A 7.65 pistol with five rounds of ammunition were seized from them. Two others – Abdul Mann and Lutfur Rahman – were arrested from another house at Nongpoh. Another team of police arrested three persons – Runuma Begum, Rezima Khan and Asmat Ali – from the Hatigaon area in the city last night. Two cars and nine mobile sets were recovered from them. The operation was led by City Commissioner of Police Hiren Chandra th.
