City river bank night haven for drug addicts!

GUWAHATI, May 9: Guwahati being the transit route of drugs, the numbers of drug addicts and drug peddlers have been on the rise in the city. In places like Bhoothth, Maligaon, Chabipul, Uzan Bazar, Paltan Bazar, Beltola, Bashistha, Noonmati etc., drugs are sold freely. These are the areas where the number of addicts is more. Of late, there has been a development. As soon as the sun sets, drug addicts come to the bank of the Brahmaputra from Muchkhowa to Uzan Bazar and remain inebriated there till late night. Tow days back, Fancy Bazar police conducted a raid in Sukreswar Ghat and arrested an addicted youth who told them that there around 20 other youths. The police say that it is not free from risk to raid the river bank for drug addicts when they are in inebriated condition. They may even jump into the river. "We have some limitations," the police said. When asked, an advocate of Gauhati High Court, M Khatoniar, said: "In India the laws against drug peddlers and drug addicts aren't that strict. Neither the addicts nor the peddlers are afraid of. This mece can only be checked through social awareness and strict laws."
