City tailors make brisk business ahead of Saraswati puja

GUWAHATI, Jan 31: Spurt in demand of self-woven Mekhela Chadors against traditiol sarees and salwars by girls of the city makes tailors of the city racing against time on the occasion of Saraswati puja on Wednesday. Moreover, orders for salwars, suits and mekhala- chadors were taken by the tailors 10 to 15 days prior to puja, some were even could not be taken in hand or be done due to rush.

“The demand in self woven Mekela Chadors is more than traditiol sarees and salwars. The demand for woven garments is double to that of sarees and salwars. Customers have been thronging the market for last one week. The price ranged from Rs 800 to Rs 2200 so far woven clothes are concerned,” Ratan Agarwala of Sky Fashions at Fancy Bazaar said.

“In normal days we accept eight to 10 orders of Mekhela Chador and salwars. During Sarawati Puja the demand doubles and some orders could not even be placed or fulfilled due to paucity of time. The rush starts 15 days prior to puja,” Nuruil Ali of Taman Fashion at Bhrigu Market said

Ra Sutradahar was too busy to talk. He said he was glued to his sewing machine since morning without any break. His shop, Geetanjali ladies and gents tailor, is located at Ganeshguri. “As many as 300 orders of mekhela chadors were placed 20 days prior to puja. We maged to take all of them. Traditiol sarees and Salwar Kameej’s gave away to self woven mekhela chadors. 150 orders of salwar kameej’s were rolled out. Order of only one sarree was placed,” Sutradahar said.

 Income and footfall doubled compared to that of normal days at the new premium L16 spa and salon located at Beltola.   “Customers for spa, facial, pedicure and manicure thronged the parlour on Sunday and we maged an income of Rs 70,000. Customers for hair dressing, style and make up will visit us on the day of puja. On that day we make up to Rs 40, 000,” hairdresser, Arup Das said.
