Civic police on their toes

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 2: The Municipal Police (MCP) of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) seems to be on their toes since the implementation of Swaach Bharat Abhiyan.

This particular segment of the enforcement branch of the GMC is unknown to citizens who are also not aware of MCP’s role in society.

“Since the propagation of Swaach Bharat Abhiyan by the government, we’re on our toes. I was normally desigted with morning shift, but I cover both the shifts due to shortage of manpower. I’m one among the over 40  MCP personnel, including home guards. I take rounds around the shops and vending spots set up on the pavements in the Survey and Beltola areas. Our role is mainly associated with maintaining cleanliness and making sure that the vendors on the footpaths don’t resort to unhygienic activities around their shops and on the streets. We cannot directly take action against a particular vendor, but with due complaints the enforcement branch of GMC takes necessary action. As a regular employee I have been working for 28 years,” Municial Police Jiten Deka said.

“The engineers of GMC take up rounds in the morning to check if the surroundings of the shops are clean and hygienic,” Deka added.
