CM exhorts youths to follow the ideals of Lachit

GUWAHATI, Nov 24: Underling the power of the youth to bring change to the society Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal today said that the youth must follow the ideals of Lachit Barphukan to protect and defend the motherland Assam from the present day challenges.

Speaking at the Lachit Divas programme held today at Fancy Bazaar river front of Bramhaputra where the 35 feet statue of Lachit Borphukan is installed, Chief Minister Sonowal said that Lachit Divas is the time to remember the supreme sacrifice made by the Ahom General and his valiant army to save Assam from outside aggressors and take inspiration from that spirit of patriotism.  

The Chief Minister also paid floral tributes at Lachit Borphukan memorial in the morning at Jalukbari in the city.  

 “Lachit Barphukan exemplified that to protect one’s motherland one must make all sacrifices. Lachit showed his dedication towards the motherland when he beheaded his own uncle for showing negligence while constructing a rampart to prevent the entry of Mughal Army into Guwahati during the Battle of Saraighat that saved the fate of Assam.” Sonowal said.

Saying that the young generation of the state must learn to respect their own motherland Sonowal urged them to study about the glorious history of the State and thereby get inspired to make Assam one of the best states of the country.

“The very idea of the state that Lachit defended so relentlessly must never be compromised and younger generation will have to work hard to bring about positive changes to the society,” he said.  

Reiterating that the legacy of Lachit Barphukan must be taken to the global stage Chief Minister Sonowal said that it is through commitment to the cause of the society that young generation can immortalize the contributions of Lachit Barphukan and all citizens must lead a life of righteousness to bring change in the truest sense of the term.  

Emphasizing on the need to protect unity of the greater Assamese society, Sonowal said that the people must defeat the evil designs of the anti social elements that want to divide the society and only then true respect would be shown to the sacrifices made by Lachit Barphukan.

The Chief Minister further declared that a Lachit Park will be constructed at Fancy Bazar area of the city. Sonowal also took salute of the SDRF personnel at the event.

Minister of Cultural Affairs ba Kumar Doley, Media Adviser to the Chief Minister Hrishikesh Goswami, MLAs Tapan Gogoi, Bimal Bora, Ritupar Bora, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, Chief Secretary V.K. Pipersenia were present on the occasion.

A play titled ‘Rangat Lachit Borphukan’ was organized at the event.
