CM lays stress on agriculture

 GUWAHATI, Jan 11: Emphasizing the urgent need to boost business economy to create a favourable market for agricultural produce, Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal urged the farmers to adopt advanced scientific technologies to enhance agricultural production in the State. 

While laying the foundation stone of phase III work of the project for development of fruits and vegetable wholesale market under Assam State Agricultural Marketing Board at Pamohi in Guwahati on Thursday, Sonowal equally underlined the importance of studying the best practices of other agriculturally advanced states of the country by the officers of the agriculture department so that appropriate interventions could be taken up.
Sonowal also laid stress on developing a robust market for the agricultural produce to ensure fair price for the farmers against their production. The Chief Minister also asked the officials of the Agriculture Department to work with dedication for successful implementation of the Central and State Government agricultural projects.
Sonowal further urged the youth to focus more on agriculture. He also called for joint efforts by the government and the public to raise the dignity of farmers in society. He also insisted on keeping close watch by the people on implementation of government schemes to weed out corruption.
State Agriculture Minister Atul Bora said that the government would transform the agriculture sector by developing an integrated market for farm products. He also advocated for proper coordition between farmers and market forces for strengthening rural economy. The Minister further said that the Agriculture Department had already distributed 8,000 power tillers amongst farmers with a view to augment agriculture production in the State. One lakh more shallow tube wells (STWs) would also be distributed by the department amongst farmers shortly, he added.
West Guwahati MLA Ramendra rayan Kalita also spoke on the occasion.
