CM orders probe into death of 2 Mizo students

GUWAHATI, May 29: Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal has ordered an enquiry into the death of two students from Mizoram who were studying at Down Town University in the city.

The bodies of the students – R Lalmalsawma and C Lalhmangaihsanga – were found near the railway crossing at Panikhaiti here yesterday morning.

Ajay Sankar Tiwari, Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, Education Department has been directed to conduct a detailed inquiry to find out the cause of death of the two students.

Meanwhile, Sonowal talked to his Mizoram counterpart Lal Thanhawla and expressed his condolence on the death of the two students. Sonowal also assured the Mizoram Chief Minister that a high-level inquiry into the death of the students would be carried out and the cause of their death would be brought to light.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) demanded of the government an inquiry into the incident. In a statement issued to the press today, AASU president Dipanka Kumar th and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi condoled the death of the two Mizo students. They said the death of the two Mizo students came as a sad news for the student community of Assam. Since the death is not a tural one, the AASU demanded of the government to order an inquiry into it.

The North East Students' Organization (NESO), in a statement issued to the press by its adviser Samujjal Bhattacharjya today, also expressed its shock at the untural death of the two Mizo students at Panikhaiti near Guwahati. The students' body demands an investigation into the case and payment of ex gratia to the next of kin of the two deceased students.
