GUWAHATI, Dec 22:  The Congress has dubbed the eviction drive carried out by the Darrang district administration at Sipajhar char on Wednesday as ‘inhuman.’

Three months after it carried out evictions from forest land adjoining Kaziranga, the BJP-led government of Sarbanda Sonowal on Wednesday evicted over 200 families in Sipajhar in Darrang district and cleared over 1,000 bigha of government land that was under encroachment for over two decades.

APCC president Ritupar Konwar and secretary Imdad Hussain in a statement today said the way the government carried out the eviction at char areas in Sipajhar area, that is very unfortute and inhuman.

“As there is adequate information that the people residing in the area are erosion-hit people and genuine Indian citizen, so the government should take steps for rehabilitation of this people before eviction,” they said.

They said that the BJP government in the state has carried out the eviction drive targeting a particular community.

The APCC said that there should have a specific eviction policy but unfortutely the BJP government has not adopted any such policy.

Meanwhile, a delegation led by Congress MLAs Abdul Khaleque and zrul Islam met Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal at Dispur and demanded rehabilitation of the evicted people.
