Congress flays BJP government over flood

GUWAHATI, July 6: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Thursday slammed the Tarun Gogoi government for its alleged failure to initiate rescue and rehabilitation process for the flood-hit people of the State on a war footing.

APCC spokesperson Prafulla Kr Das in a statement said Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal-led State government has not taken the issue of flood seriously despite the devastating flood has so far claimed more than 15 lives so far.

The flood situation in State has worsened with over 4 lakh people being affected across the State. Over 800 villages across the State are affected. The worst affected is Karimganj, where over 1.59 lakh people have been affected by the deluge, followed by Lakhimpur with more than 81,000 sufferers.

The BJP government could complete the construction of dikes in the state before monsoon season because the government did not take the matter seriously.

“The BJP government ignoring the flood woes of the people had spent crores of rupees of the State exchequer in the me of organizing mami Brahmaputra festival,” Das said.

The Congress further slammed Prime Minister rendra Modi for not visiting the State to take stock of the flood situation.

“When other states experience flood, Prime Minister Modi immediately rush to those state and declare flood package, but when Assam reels under devastating flood, leave the package, he even cannot spare time to visit the State to take stock of the flood situation,” said the Congress spokesperson in the statement.

He said that the Central government has not yet released the flood package of Rs 1200 crore which declared when Congress was in power in the State.

The Assam Congress has further demanded the Sonowal government that immediate steps be taken for providing relief to flood-hit people and their rehabilitation.

On the other hand, APCC president Ripun Bora has called upon party workers to extended help to the flood-affected people of the State.
