Congress shaky over BIPOD-mukta Asom agenda, says BJP

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 9: The BJP has said that the party’s BIPOD-mukta Asom agenda – ‘Bi’ for Bideshi (foreigners), ‘Po’ for produshon (pollution) and ‘D’ for durniti (corruption) mukta (free) i.e. Assam free from foreigners, pollution and corruption – has made the Congress shaky.

Addressing the press at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati on Monday, party’s state spokesperson Rupam Goswami said: “The Congress, AIUDF and some Left parties have been out to mislead society in the State by viewing things from a different perspective so as to create social unrest. The BJP came to power in Assam with the promise of making Assam free from foreigners, pollution and corruption, besides making the State free from insurgents. This agenda of the ruling party has threatened the very existence of the Congress in the State. The Congress doesn't want Assam to be free from foreigners, pollution, corruption and insurgents. With a view to derailing the government from its avowed goals former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has been out to attack the State Government for one or the other false charges. Apart from the AGP and the BPF, the BJP has formed its government with support from representatives of Rabha, Tiwa and other communities. In sync with this, Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, with a view to reorganizing State’s social fabric, has adopted the policy of going ahead by taking all communities of the State along. On the contrary, the Congress wants disintegration of various communities in the State so as to derive political mileage out of that.”

Reacting to Gogoi’s allegation that Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal dares not take action against his Cabinet colleagues for their corrupt practices, Goswami said: “How come Gogoi talks of courage? During his 15-year-rule as the Chief Minister in the State he dared not act against any corrupt people. Rather he encouraged corrupt people. On the contrary, soon after coming to power Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal acted against corruption with courage and put as many as 56 bureaucrats behind bars. This is unparalleled in the country. Who doesn’t know the rampant killing of rhinos in the State during the Congress regime? However, after the BJP coming to power the mece has been brought under control. Only two rhinos have been killed in the State in the past nine months.”

Senior party leader and Assam Minority Development Board (AMDB) chairman Muminul Aowal said: “The Congress has been openly spreading panic in minority-domited areas in the State saying that Army personnel will seize all NRC-related documents. Siddeque Ahmed openly said that army men would be engaged to seize NRC documents of minority people in the State so as to debar their entry in the NRC. The Congress has failed to respond to my allegation properly. Rather the party responded to it in such a way that smacks of the proverbial Assamese saying ‘Gossain Ghorot kun? Moi kol khuwa i’ (guilty mind is always suspicious). The Congress has always been using the minorities as its vote bank and complicated their problems.”

Meanwhile, in a statement issued to the press on Monday, the Minority Morcha of the BJP Assam Pradesh said: “Members of the AAMSU and some other organizations have been spreading panic in minority-domited areas in the State even before the publication of the draft NRC. Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal has taken every step to ensure no harassment to any genuine Indian citizen.”
