Congress’ North Guwahati Town Committee members join BJP en masse; seemingly adopting Chakya Niti Himanta claims BJP will enjoy majority in GMC within 15 days

GUWAHATI, Sept 4: Has the BJP, with the help of master strategist Himanta Biswa Sarma, has adopted Chakya Niti in Assam? Before defeating the ndas, Chakya had to employ various strategies. His attack from the edges of the Magadha Empire, instead of its core, Pataliputra, proved to be the most successful one to defeat the ndas.

As though following the Chakya Niti, the BJP has caused erosion in the Congress in the border areas, leaving the centre intact. The Congress support base fraying at the edges in Assam has gained its momentum today. The Himanta Biswa factor in the Congress has a direct bearing on this unhealthy development in the party. To begin with, the former three-time minister in Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s Cabinets, has chosen the North Guwahati Town Committee (NGTC) that has joined the BJP en masse today.

With the Congress councillors in North Guwahati Town Committee joining the BJP en masse, the BJP is set to form the Town Committee with absolute majority tomorrow. Earlier the BJP had only one councillor in the town committee and the Congress had four. The four Congress councillors who have joined the BJP today are Arupa Das of Ward No. 9, Nirmala Das of Ward No. 2, Ilamoni Deka of Ward No. 3 and Amulya Deka of Ward No. 4.

Speaking at the function, Himanta Biswa Sarma said: “The BJP will enjoy majority in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) also within the next 15 days.”

Till earlier in the day today, the BJP had 11 councillors in the 31-member GMC against 19 of the Congress. However, three Congress councillors, all from Jalukbari LAC, have joined the BJP today, raising the strength of the Saffron party to 14 against 16 of the Congress. The three Congress councillors who have joined the BJP today are Sikha Dey of Ward No. 2, Pradip Roy of Ward No. 3 and Shyamal Chakravarty of Ward No. 4. This apart, four Congress area sabha members of these three wards have also joined the BJP today.

The Congress has also suffered losses in other town committees, mainly in Kamrup. No. 13 Sualkuchi Zila Parishad Councillor Krish Baishya, No. 14 Saraighat Zila Parishad Councillor, No. 15 Bezera Zila Parishad Councillor, and Sualkuchi AP Councillor of the Congress have joined the BJP. Eleven gaon panchayat presidents of Dadara, Posoria, Hingimari, Gandhamou, Songshor, Pub-Sualkuchi, Mandakata, Saraighat, Dhupatari, Rudreswar and Lachitgarh have joined the BJP. At the AP-level, six AP councillors of Bezera, Mandakata, Saraighat, Dhuptari, Rudreswar and Lachitgarh have joined the BJP.

Speaking on the occasion, State BJP president Siddhartha Bhattachrayya said: “Leaders from other parties have been joining the BJP as they are attracted to the ideology and policy of the Congress.”
