Contrast: AGP glum, BJP joyous

GUWAHATI, March 5: Contrast to the joyous at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan at Hengrabari in the city, the AGP headquarters at Ambari in the city wears a glum look. Within nine months of partnership between the two parties, the regiol party has started feeling that its big coalition brother is not one to share its sadness.

Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, at long last, appointed as many as 43 chairmen, vice chairmen and directors of as many as 28 boards, PSUs and corporations of the State yesterday. The representations of the AGP and the BFP look much pale by comparison with that of the BJP. The AGP got only four and three by the BFP of the 28 PSUs. The BJP took the share in bulk –21 PSUs.

The four AGP members who were appointed as PSU chiefs are Dr. Kamala Kanta Kalita as the chairman of Khadi and Village Industries Board, Manoj Saikia as the chairman of Assam Livestock and Poultry Development Corporation, Prabin Hazarika as the chairman on Assam Trade Promotion Organization and Pukon Baruah as the chairman of Assam Hydrocarbon and Energy Company.

The AGP was open in its disappointment at the appointment. Dr. Kamala Kanta Kalita and Manoj Saikia told the media openly today that the BJP betrayed them, besides violating the coalition pact. “The recommendation sent from the AGP for such appointment has not been given justice. The appointment is far from being proportiol, which is one of the preconditions for the alliance,” they said, and added: “We’re not happy at all. Even we’re not sure if we’ll join the posts given to us. The matter will be discussed at the party. The matter of joining or not joining rests with the party.”

Contrast to this, the State BJP office at Hengrabari in the city wore a joyous look. Most of those who got appointments were present at the party office. They were seen greeted by their party colleagues for their new assignments. Some of them said that they were happy to have got such responsibilities. “We’ll perform our level best,” some of them said.

State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass, in a statement today, greeted all those who have been appointed as chairmen and vice chairmen of various boards, PSUs and corporations. He has appealed to them to work with sincerity. Dass expressed his hope that the new chairmen and vice chairmen will rise to the occasion to fulfill the aspirations of the people of the State and the government through their performance. He said that a number of posts of chairmen and vice chairmen are yet to be filled up. The Chief Minister is going to fill them up soon, he said.
