Contribution of differently-abled equally necessary, says Sonowal

GUWAHATI, March 5: Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal said that differently-able persons constitute a chunk of human resources in Assam and in order to make the State stronger their contribution is equally necessary.

“Distributing assistive devices to the differently-able people, along with Assam State Legal Services Authority, is one of our efforts to bring ‘dibyangs’ to mainstream society and use their services to propel growth of the State,” he said.

Referring to the census report which put the figure of differently-able people in Assam around 4.5 lakh, Sonowal said that State Government is putting its head and heart to prepare a database of people with deformities of different sorts and draw a roadmap for their development. He also mentioned the budgetary allocation under ‘Sugam Assam’ where in special pedestals and ramps will be put in place in every DC office for the convenience of differently-able people. Citing words of encouragement for differently-able persons Sonowal mentioned the mes of Stephan Hawking, sportsperson Mariyappan Thangavelu who, in spite of physical ibility, climbed the ladder of success.  

Sonowal also thanked Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice Ajit Singh, Assam State Legal Services Authority, Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India and Bhagawan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti for advancing their agenda and tied with State Government for helping the ‘dibyangs’ with dedication and humility.

Sonowal went there to iugurate a project med Reach out and respond (Xahari) where fitment of artificial limbs and appliances to differently-able persons were distributed at a programme held at GMCH auditorium in the city.

The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, while sharing his views at the programme, said that society needs to develop a special feeling for the differently-able people as he brought his message to him by humming a few lines from Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s immortal number ‘Manuhe Manuhor babe.....’ (A human being is for (the need) of other Human beings).

Children of Bal Bhavan also presented a bhajan after lighting the ceremonial lamp on the occasion.

Initially differently-able persons from six districts Kamrup (M), Kamrup, gaon, Darrang, Goalpara and Morigaon were provided with fitments from March 3 to 11 under the project Xahari. Around 32,842 differently-able persons are targeted from all over the State. As a part of the project 13 such disability camps will be organized in several districts of the State.  

Appliances distributed in the programme are six walking sticks, 11 Braille Cane Folding for visually challenged, 21 wheel chairs, 15 tricycles, 360 11-Zinc Air Battery, 60 BTE Digital Type Hearing Aid (Type II), besides artificial limbs.

Minister of State (independent charge) of Social Welfare ba Kumar Doley, Judge Gauhati High Court and Executive Chairman of Assam State Legal Services Authority Hrishikesh Roy, Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia, founder patron of Bhagawan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti D.R. Mehta, East Guwahati MLA Siddhartha Bhattacharjee, Additiol Chief Secretary Social Welfare Ravi Capoor and a host of dignitaries were present on the occasion.
