Cotton College hits headline for wrong reason

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 12: It seems all is not well with Cotton College! Of late, the premier college of the State keeps on hitting headlines for wrong reasons. What has gone wrong with its boarders?

A number of boarders of the college made the college authorities hang their heads in shame yesterday when they (some boarders) rampaged through the city near the college, involving themselves in a hot altercation escalating to fisticuffs with security personnel on duty.

It so happened that two boarders asked the personnel of an Assam Police battalion to remove the vehicle parked on the road near the college hostel. This led to an altercation between the boarders and a jawan of 4th APBn. This led other jawans, numbering around 30, rushed to the spot and apparently calmed the situation. Being outnumbered, the two boarders decamped only to come back with a bigger gang from their hostel. The rampaging gang vandalized the vehicle. Soon the jawans rushed to the spot, leading to a scuffle with the students. Some media photographers had to face the wrath of the rampaging students when one of them attacked a cameraman. The jawans soon caught hold of the student and made him to tender an abject apology before the cameraman. The students later fled the scene.

The vehicle was used to carry cash from various banks to the RBI yesterday. After depositing the amount with the RBI, the officials and security personnel on duty parked the vehicle there.

A 4th APBn jawan, Girish Dev Prasad, filed an FIR with Paltan Bazar police station in this connection. Investigation is on, but no arrest has been made so far.

It is worth mentioning here that during the Cotton Fest 2017 yesterday there was a commotion when a woman – Kaklata Paik – was detected selling illicit country liquor on the college premises. When she was caught by the police, she said that she was asked to sell liquor there by a student of the college.
