By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 27: CPI(M) activists today staged a demonstration in front of the NRC office at Bhangagarh in Guwahati in protest against the move to accord Indian citizenship to Bangladeshi Hindus who had entered the State after March 24, 1971.

Though the Left party members staged the demonstration for a long time, no one from the State NRC coordition office met the agitators. The activists handed over their memorandum to NRC deputy director Apurba Kumar th. They demanded of the government to publish the draft NRC by March 31, 2017 and keep the cut-date for citizenship – March 24, 1971 – intact.

Senior CPI(M) leader Deven Bhattacharya, who led the protest, said: “Soon after assuming the office of the Chief Minister, Sarbnda Sonowal did assure the people of the State that the draft of the NRC would be published soon. However, now his government is delaying the NRC update on various pretexts.”
