Crime graph keeps rising in Assam

GUWAHATI, Sept 22: It seems there are few takers of the idiom ‘crime does not pay’, and the glaring proof of this is the rising crime graph in the State.

If the statistics given by the tiol Crime Records Bureau are to the believed, crimes like murder, rape, kidpping, looting and robbery, riots etc., have been on the rise in Assam. According to the statistics of the Bureau, the total number of crimes in Assam in 2011 was 11,420, that jumped to 16,847 in 2012, fell to 13,295 in 2013, and again jumped to 14,590 in 2014.

According to the statistics, the number of total murders in the State in 2011 was 1,303, and it rose to 1,368 in 2012, fell to 1,354 in 2013 and again rose to 1,451 in 2014. The trend in rape cases in the State is no different. In 2011, the total number of rape cases in the state was 1,700, which rose to 1716 in 2012, to 1937 in 2013 and to 1980 in 2012. Likewise, the number of kidpping cases in the State was 3,764 in 2011, which rose to 3,812 in 2012, to 4,801 in 2013 and to 4,823 in 2014. The number of dacoity and robbery cases in the State in 2011 was 1,142, which rose to 1,173 in 2012, fell to 1,169 in 2013 and again rose to 1,305 in 2014. Riots, according to the Bureau, was the highest in the State in 2012 with as many as 5,077 incidents since 2011 when the total number was 2,328 against 2,429 in 2013 and 2,640 in 2014.
