Crimes of all hues mark 2016

GUWAHATI, Dec 11: No matter how tempting it may appear, crime does not pay. This is accepted as a universal truth, yet people commit crimes and in many cases they go unpunished because of lapses in investigation of cases or because of travesty of justice.

The year 2016 in Assam (till September) is marked by murders, kidpping, robbery, looting, extortion, burglary, theft, rioting, rape and cheating. There are numerous cases registered in the police stations in the State.

Till September this year there were as many as 882 murder cases registered in various police stations in the State. The number of murder cases in 2015 was 1,333. Kidpping, by militants or by others, is another crime that robs people of their peace. There were as many as 4,704 kidpping cases in the State till September this year against 6,103 cases in 2015.

The looters are not lagging behind. Till September this year as many as 117 looting cases were registered in various police stations in the State against 194 such cases in 2015.  

Robbers rob people of their cash and other valuables, and hence peace. Till September this year, 684 cases of robbery were registered in the State against 934 in 2015.  Extortionists, if they are militants, extort to sustain on others’ hard-earned money. However, these days there are others as well who are out to mint money through extortions. Till September this year, 989 cases of extortion were registered in the State against 1,361 in 2015.

The police stations in the State registered 3,623 burglary cases till September this year against 4,739 cases in 2015. Till September this year the number of theft cases registered was 9,453 against 12,024 in 2015.

The number of rioting cases in the State till September this year is 1,340 against 2,215 in 2015.

Cheating cases in the State till September this year were 2,983 against 3,781 in 2015. Till September this year the various police stations in the State registered as many as 1,324 rape cases against 1,852 in 2015.
