Cyber crime on the rise, 4 looted in a week

GUWAHATI, July 9: Cyber crime is on the rise in the city with four such cases reported within a week. On Thursday morning, cyber crimils looted Rs. 16, 000 from one Krish Das a PWD employee and a resident of Shantipur area of the city. According to reports, on Thursday morning Das received a call from the mobile number 7787846972, who introduced himself as an official of SBI Main Branch and asked for his 16 digit ATM card number, stating that his card’s validity is about to expire and the bank will extend the validity. Das gave the 16 digit card number without hesitating, following which he received an one time password in his mobile. Soon the caller asked for the one time password and as Das gave it away to him, the crimils looted Rs. 16,000 from his account. A case has been registered in this regard with the Bharalumukh police station. Das also approached the SBI main branch, who said that the bank never makes persol call to its customers. On seeking details of the transaction, it has come to light that the crimils used his card for online shopping purpose. A source in the SBI Main Branch has informed that in the last one week four such incidents  have been reported.
