Cycling 70 km to give life a second chance

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 27: Recently, the Guwahati city saw another cyclothon event attached to a cause. The event, med, “A Ride To the Unexplored”, was an initiative by Everything Outdoor NE and Zublee Foundation.

Zublee Foundation is the first NGO in the northeast India that is all set to spread awareness on organ dotion. The event aimed at  promoting a healthy lifestyle among the city people and  to generate awareness about the importance of organ dotion and the responsibility of an individual to give a new life to many. One brain dead person can gift his or her organs or tissues and save nine other lives at one time. It is about making this society a better place to live in.

The event started at 7 a.m from Soram High School Field, Guwahati, which was flagged off by actor Diganta Hazarika and renowned singer Zublee Baruah. The cyclists were escorted by the volunteers and an ambulance from the Guwahati Medical College (GMC) followed them for assistance. The route covered approximately 70 kms starting  from Soram Field to Borbaka, North Guwahati via Mandakata returning back to Soram Field via Dirghesori Mandir. It took around 7 hours to complete the route.

A verbal session was organized in a school premise to let people know what Zublee Foundation is about; and its vision. A short session was held after the cyclists reached Borbaka. A small activity on organ dotion was also carried out among the participants. The sentinel team interacted with Priyanka Borah, CEO, Zublee Foundation to delve into the subject and understand their goals better.

In what ways are you trying to curb the myths about organ dotion?

This is the sole reason which creates a barrier in carrying out our primary activities of raising Awareness on Organ dotion among the public. We try to ratiolize by sharing donor/ recipient stories that are taking place in the country as well as making them aware about the cause and advanced medical science practice.

Do you have a tie up with any hospital or healthcare centres to use the doted organs to offer a second chance at life?

As of now, we do not have any tie up with any health care institution as there is no cadaver organ dotion happening in Assam so far. We are trying to make  that happen, and hopefully, after a few months we will be able to tie up for such endeavours. However, we are associated with a few hospitals in Guwahati only to raise awareness on Organ Dotion to build a background first. And, Cyclothon is one such event.

How was the response of Cyclothon?

The response was wonderful. The participants were very fervent. They shared that they have been into cycling events before, but for a few, this was the first time that they have come across the concept of Organ Dotion. They are immensely interested in joining Everything Outdoor NE and Zublee Foundation’s events in the near future.
