MIRZA, March 7: The Palasbari police outpost came under siege when people in the locality, including members of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU),   gheraoed it for a long time in protest against a dacoit fleeing the outpost.

Last night a gang of six/seven dacoits entered the house of Chandradhar Kalita in the area. The dacoit first gagged Chandradhar who was injured while trying to free himself from the clutch of the dacoits. His daughter Arpa Kalita and rayan Kalita also sustained injuries inflicted with sharp weapons in a scuffle with the dacoits. The hue and cry in the scuffle let the neighbours rushed to the house, and caught hold one of the dacoits while the others decamped soon. The dacoit has been identified as Jiaul Islam from Majo Sar in Barpeta. The local people handed over the dacoit to Palasbari police outpost. However, the dacoit escaped from the police outpost last night. The irate local people gheraoed the outpost this morning. South Kamrup SP Prashanta Saikia and Palasbari Revenue Circle officer Pankaj Chakravarty rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. CRPF personnel have been deployed in the area. In-charge of the outpost Pradip Hazarika and constable on duty Sultan Haque have been placed under suspension.
