DC visits Umanda, issues directives

GUWAHATI, June 15: Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Dr. M Angamuthu has asked the Guwahati Municipal Development Authority (GMDA) to fence the sensitive places in the Umanda Island so as to stop accidents there.

The move came close on the heels of a student of Cotton College falling in the Brahmaputra from the river island recently. The body of the girl is yet to be fished out.

Following a directive from the Chief Minister, the DC visited the island today taking personnel of the State police and river police, officials of the GMDA, Archeological Survey of India and SDRF to take stock of the safety norms at the river island. The DC said that the City Police would have to help the River Police SP in monitoring ferries ferrying people to and from the Island. He also asked the River Police SP to plan a secured plan for Umanda. The river police has also been asked to set up a permanent check post.

The DC asked the SDRF to submit it its plan to meet emergency situations and to keep a boat under its disposal so as to meet every emergency situation.

The DC asked the GMDA to set up a temporary camp at Umanda for the benefit of security personnel and other officials.
