GUWAHATI, Nov 16: The Chay Jagosthiya Maha Sanmilan (CJMS) today staged a dhar in front of Raj Bhavan in the city in support of their demand for according ST(P) status to the six ethnic communities of Assam -- Moran, Mottock, Koch Rajbongshi, Chutia, Tai Ahom and Tea Tribes --, and set the deadline of December 31, 2015 for the Centre to provide ST(P) status to the six ethnic groups. Over 100 members of the six organizations of the ethnic groups took part in the dhar today.

The Sanmilan also submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister rendra Modi through the Governor. The Sanmilan comprises the All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Sanmilani, All Assam Matak Sanmilan, Assam Moran Sabha, All Assam Chutia Sanmilan, All Assam Ahom Sabha and the Assam Cha Jagosthi Jatiya Mahasabha.

The Sanmilan has cautioned those who oppose the move to accord ST(P) status to the six ethnic communities in the State to stay away from opposing it. It has also asked the political parties not to do any politics on the issue of according ST(P) status to the six ethnic groups. The Governor assured the Sanmilan leaders that since the process for according ST(P) status to the six communities is underway, the demand of the Sanmilan will be met soon. He asked the Sanmilan leaders to see that no mes of foreigners are included in the NRC that is being updated in the State.

Meanwhile, the Sanmilan submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister rendra Modi through the Governor today. Welcoming Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju’s statement that the Union Home Ministry has already given approval to provide ST(P) status to the six ethnic groups, the memorandum of the Sanmilan claimed that the six ethnic groups meet the criteria for being ST(P), and as such there should not be any hurdles in meeting the demand.

A 12-member CJMS team is leaving for New Delhi in November-end to know the status of the move to provide ST status to the six ethnic groups in the State.
