Crimes against women

GUWAHATI, March 31: Revealing a startling statistics of 88 rape cases, including 87 to have been committed by Muslims of Bangladesh origin, in the past 26 days, BJP MLA from Hojai Shiladitya Deb has said that 95 per cent of crimes in Assam are committed by Muslims of Bangladesh-origin.

The MLA has demanded intervention of the Union Ministry of Exterl Affairs into the issue of a Hindu girl from Karimganj fleeing to Bangladeshi recently and getting married there, besides her conversion into Islam.

Addressing the media in Guwahati on Saturday, the MLA said: “Ninety-five per cent of rapes, molestations and other forms of crimes taking place in Assam are committed by Muslims of Bangladesh origin. In 2015, I did study crimil cases of six districts in the State for six months. The study has revealed that in 95% of the cases Muslims of Bangladesh origin are involved.”

On religious conversion, Deb said: “Such conversion did take place in India earlier for various reasons. However, the mece is still alive with a section of people are forced to embrace other religions in the State. Such an incident occurred in Karimganj district in the State recently. A college girl went missing on March 12, 2018. After a few days, the girl has sent a VDO message to the Karimganj SP from Dhaka police station stating that she went to Bangladesh on her own via Agartala without any passport and visa. How can a girl go to Bangladesh without any passport or visa? Isn’t it the duty of authorities in Bangladeshi to send her back to India since she has entered their territory without any visa? I request the Union Ministry of Exterl Affairs to intervene into this matter.”

The MLA said: “The youth for whom the girl from Karimganj went to Bangladesh was working as a representative of a Bangladesh-based company in Assam. Such youths are out to lure local girls from other religions. Some 10/15 such companies from Bangladesh have been operating in Assam. Their representatives come to Assam with visas and lure local girls. They opt to stay in rented houses even as they’re supposed to stay in hotels. There may be cases of Assam girls lured to Bangladesh and then sold to Arabian countries. This is a very serious issue.’’
