Department of Atomic Energy to take over BBCI

GUWAHATI, June 14: As a mark of respect for contribution in the establishment of Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati by the erstwhile Lokabandhu Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Society Trust, the Magement of the Institute felicitated founder and present members of the erstwhile Trust at a function on yesterday.

BBCI Director Dr AC Kataki, in his welcome address, recollect the historic moment of Fenruary 28, 1958 when at a public meeting in bin Bordoloi Hall a decision was taken by a group of visiory leaders under the initiative of Late Debendra th Sarma to establish a Cancer Institute in Guwahati in memory of freedom fighter, philanthropist of Assam Lokabandhu Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah.  He also recalled the contribution of the Founder Secretary of the Trust Dr. Kak Chandra Borooah, Mahadeo Khaglia, Ganpath Dhanuka, Durgadutta Lohia, Badyath Mukherjee, Birendra th Choudhury, Dr. Gashyam Das, Dr. lini Sarma, Dr. Bhupen Phukan, Indu Prava Baruah, RN Borooah, Bimala Prasad Chaliha, Mohendra Mohan Choudhury, Bishnu Ram Medhi and Dhirendra th Baruah – only living founding member of the Trust.  The foundation stone of the Institute was laid in 1962 in a plot of land doted by Government of Assam.  The Institute was iugurated on November 18, 1973 by Mohendra Mohan Choudhury, then Governor of Punjab.  The first tele-cobalt machine was iugurated by Rabi Ray, Union Minister of Health, on June 20, 1979.  The Institute was recognized by the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in 1980.  The State Government took over the Institute in 1986 and since 1989 the Institute is funded by the North Eastern Council, Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India and Government  of Assam.  During the tenure of Prafulla Kumar Mahanta as a Chief Minister of Assam and Chandra Mohan Patowary as Health Minister, the Institute entered into a tripartite agreement with NEC, DAE and Government of Assam in 1989.

The BBCI Director profusely thanked Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, Governor Banwarilal Purohit, DoNER Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Dr. Sekhar Basu for their untiring support to bring Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati under Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India on June 7, 2017.   

In the function, Dhirendra th Baruah, founder trustee of the institute, was felicitated with a traditiol gamocha and a memento in recognition of his contribution for establishment of this premier Cancer Institute of the North Eastern Region.
