Directive on SC order on wine shops

GUWAHATI, April 1: The Excise Commissioner, Assam has asked all concerned to comply with the Supreme Court of India’s order issued on March 31, 2017 asking the closure of all kinds of liquor retail ‘off’ and ‘on’ license falling within a distance of 500 metres from the other edge of the tiol or state highway, including service lanes, with effect from April 1, 2017. The Excise Commissioner, however, said that in case of areas in notified urban local bodies with a population of 20,000 or less the distance of 500 metres shall stand reduced to 220 metres. Shifting proposals of such closed shops from the existing location may be expedited in the interest of revenue.
