Disaster magement: Mock drills at ward level in city

GUWAHATI, Feb 15: Want to get ready to face disasters? Know the drill first, albeit, through mock drills.  

The District Disaster Magement Authority, Kamrup (Metro), in association with Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the Assam State Disaster Magement Authority (ASDMA) conducted ward-level dock drills in the city on February 14 and 15, 2017.

The basic objective of the ward-level mock drill is to build a participatory approach and involve the community in the disaster magement works. Nock drills help in testing the response capabilities of various responding agencies like the SDRF, NDRF, Civil Defense and State Health sector, along with the role of elected representatives of GMC and the community.

Already 26 sensitization meetings were also conducted in the 26 wards on disaster related issues by the DDMA, Kamrup Metro in association with GMC and Assam State Disaster Magement Authority. A Ward Disaster Magement Committee is also formed in each ward. The municipal wards are divided in three zones for the activity – Central Zone, Eastern Zone and Western Zone. A total of 3 mock drills would be conducted in 3 zones.

The table top exercise for the first ward-level mock drill was organized on February 14, 2017 at Cotton Collegiate Higher Secondary School. Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania graced the occasion as the chief guest. GMC Commissioner SG Baruah, Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu and ASDMA State Project Coorditor RP Baruah were present on the occasion and encouraged all to take active participation in the whole exercise.

The fil mock drill was held on February 15, 2017 at Cotton Collegiate Higher Secondary School based on a mass casualty earthquake scerio.
