Disaster risk reduction workshop underway

Guwahati, March 7: Assam State Disaster Magement Authority in association with UNICEF, Assam has organized a regiol-level Consultation on Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation into Development Policies and Practices on 7th and 8th March 2017 at Assam Administrative Staff College, Khapara. Bhaskar Baruah, former Secretary to the Government of India, MGVK Bhanu, Additiol Chief Secretary, GDD, UDD, P & RD Department Government of Assam, PK Barthakur, Principal Secretary, Environment & Forest Department, Govt. Of Assam, Dr. Ajit Pattik, PCCF & Project Director, Odisha Forestry Sector Development Projects,  AK, Johari IFS, Addl. PCCF & Member Secretary, Assam State Bio Diversity Board, Assam, Vedprakash Gautam, Officer In Charge UNICEF Assam, Senior Government officials from Assam, Odisha, Bihar and the different States of North East also graced the occasion.

The workshop is organized with the objectives of Identifying the common areas of mainstreaming DRR and CCA like; health, nutrition, child protection, education and WASH , Improved understanding of key intertiol policy and guidelines in the field of DRR & CCA for enhanced community resilience addressing the issues of children and women. Identification of regiol priorities for action and cooperation in CCA and resilience building, Linking child-centric DRR interventions, CCA and SDGs and Linking CCA and DRR in an integrated approach for resilience in the NE region in the line of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustaible Development Goal frameworks.

Mr. A.K. Johari, IFS, Addl. PCCF, Assam spoke on the Climate Change Issues and Challenges in Assam and Dr. Ajit Pattik spoke on the Adverse Impact of Climate Change and Disaster on Children and Women. Mr. SS Sahota UNICEF, Delhi highlighted on the Intertiol Policy and Guidelines; SFDRR and SDG Linkages and Mr. Sanjay Vashist, CANSA, Delhi focused on the Mainstreaming of CCA in Addressing Children and Women in NE Region. The Assam Experience on the Mainstreaming of DRR & CCA was given by Ms. ndita Hazarika, ACS, MD, ASRLM, Assam. The welcome address was given by Rajib Prakash Baruah, State Project Coorditor, ASDMA and the vote of thanks was proposed by B. B Gadyak from UNICEF Assam.

Rajib Prakash Baruah, State Project Coorditor, ASDMA said in this speech that such consultation is a step towards attainment of the mainstreaming of CCA and DRR in an integrated approach for building resilience in the NE region, a press release said.
