Dispur abetting encroachment: PVM

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 13: Prabajan Virodhi Manch (PVM) convener Upamanyu Hazarika has alleged that the Assam Government and its functiories have been committing an ‘offence of abetment’ by not acting against land encroachers and in turn providing all amenities to them.

Talking to newsmen at Guwahati Press Club here on Friday, Hazarika said: “PVM’s publicity convener Akash Kalita has been issued a charge sheet on August 28, 2017. The head of Sipajhar police outpost filed a case against Kalita, leading to the issuance of the charge sheet with Kalita as the sole accused. The charge sheet even made no mention of the encroachers. The fact remains that Kalita did lodge a complaint against encroachment of land on the premises of an ancient Shiva Temple of Dholpur in Sipajhar with Sipajhar police Station on July 12, 2016. For long fourteen months nothing happened to the complaint lodged by Kalita. However, the police filed a case against Kalita only after the latter released a video clip in social media on October 8, 2017. This, apart from being a complete subversion of justice, is also a clear violation of freedom of speech, just because the Chief Minister and the senior officers of the government are shown in the video clip…From this incident, it is very clear that the State Government and its functiories are in support of encroachment and Bangladeshis, and will go to any extent to muzzle any protest. Not only is land grabbing an offence under the Assam Land Grabbing Act, 2010, but it is also an offence to aid and abet such land grabbing and which the officers of the district administration by not acting against the encroachers and in turn providing all amenities have committed the offence of abetment.”
