GUWAHATI, August 10: How successful is Tarun Gogoi as the Home Minister of the State? This is a million dollar question. The rising crime rate since 2011 in the State has depicted the true picture of the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the State.

Replying to a question from AGP MLA Keshab Mahanta on the very first day of the Summer Session of the State Assembly today, P&RD Minister Rakibul Hussain said, on behalf of Home Minister Tarun Gogoi, said: “The number of killing cases in the State in 2011 was 1,321, which rose to 1,478 in 2014 and 548 till May, 2015.”

It has been a sad state of affairs when the number of crimes against women is taken into consideration in the State since 2011. The number of rape cases, according the Hussain, keeps on rising since 2011. “The number of rape cases in the State was 1,707 in 2011, which rose to 2,047 in 2014 and 738 till May in 2015,” he said.

The number of kidpping cases in the State has also been rising since 2011. According to Hussain, the number of kidpping cases in 2011 was 3,785, which rose to 5,378 in 2014 and 2,635 till May in 2015. Likewise, the number of extortion cases, according to Hussain, was 992 in 2011, which rose to 1,357 in 2014 and 593 till May 2015. The number of theft cases, according to the minister, was 8,350 in 2011, which rose to 12198 in 2014 and 4,981 till May, 2015. The number of car lifting cases in the State was 2,789 in 2011, which rose to 4,154 in 2014 and 1,785 till May, 2015.

Hussain further informed the Assembly that as many as 54 people were killed in the State after branding them as witches from 2011 to May 2015. During this period as many as 48 people were killed by the police and other security forces while controlling mobs, the minister said, and added during that period as many as 336 militants were also killed in anti-insurgency operations.

The minister further informed the House that from December 23, 2014 when the NDFB(S) had gone on the rampage in North Bank to July 31, 2015 as many as 15 NDFB(S) rebels were killed and 448 others were apprehended.
